About Me

Hello!  Welcome to my digital commonplace book for ENGL*3170, Elizabethan Literary Culture!

Me... riding a concrete hippo.

My name is Jacob Cassidy and I’m a fourth-year English major, Environmental Studies minor student at the University of Guelph.  Throughout my degree I have been drawn to modern and contemporary literary theory and have a particular interest in comic culture.  Over the last two semesters I have completed a Directed Reading course and an Honours Thesis on the Batman phenomenon.  My thesis focused on the historical development of the Joker, the graphic novel The Killing Joke, and Alan Moore’s influential hand in creating a well-rounded supervillain.

While the Elizabethan era hasn’t necessarily been a topic of particular interest for me I’m really looking forward to learning about people, places, and things other than Shakespeare (not that he’s a bad guy, I just want to broaden my horizons).  What else was going on at this time? Why do we only focus on Shakespeare?  Did he offer that much more than everyone else?  Why does everyone wear those big, frilly, rings around their necks in portraits?  These are just a few of the questions I have.  Can’t wait to find answers!
